History

SHAWNEE TOWSHIP is located in historic Allen County, which was formed from Indian Territory. The Township’s development was spurred by the construction of the Lake Erie and Western Railroad and by the discovery of oil in Allen County in 1885. The Township continues to enjoy the benefits of a stable economy based on largely on agriculture and petroleum refining.

In 1834, settlers claiming lands in remote territories of the nation formed Shawnee Township. Rich in Indian and Pioneer History the Township was named from the Indians who lived on a reservation in the area.

When the original settlers of the area established farms, businesses, schools, and churches, they also established a tradition of hard work and neighborly cooperation. The citizens who today make Shawnee Township their home uphold these exemplary values and take pride in the rich history of their area.

Our state is only as strong as its individual communities--communities whose citizens are responsible, concerned, and involved and who work continually to improve the quality of life in the world around them. Shawnee Township residents are proud of their Township’s progress and its contributions to the growth and development of the State of Ohio.
