Police History

Shawnee Township Police Department was created March 1, 1972 with a Chief of Police and a staff of 4 police constables. A budget of $455,954 was appropriated to operate the police department. In November of 1980 a 1.3 mill levy was passed by residents and in 1988 a police district was formed adding an additional 1.5 mills. In November of 2005 a 2.0 mill 5 year renewal levy was passed.The Township contained a separate entity The Village of Fort Shawnee. In 2012 after serious financial issues  the village of Ft. Shawnee residents voted to disincorporate the village. The Village of Ft. Shawnee police departments duties were then transferred to the Townships department creating additional area and population for the township to serve.

The police department currently employs 11 full time and 5 part time officers. The department consists of a Chief of Police, three Sergeants, ten Officers, and two detectives. The department has five marked and two unmarked police units.
